This video demonstrates piloting the craft into orbit. Sometimes I like to make a spacecraft with a cluster of jets for it's first stage. Today I decided to make a smallish craft designed to capture and mine asteroids. Unable to recall the last time I made a jet-to-orbit craft, it seemed the time to do it again was now.

I made a first-draft of this craft that has successfully captured an asteroid, and as usual I found a few things lacking in the design. Ive tried to polish this revised build off a bit, but of course there is always room for improvements, as well as your own customization's.

Do be aware that this vessel, while it can technically seat five, has recovery equipment for only two Kerbalnauts.

If you have never flown to orbit with jet engines, be prepared for a longer than usual orbital insertion, due to the shallow entry vector and limited power. I encourage you to try doing the flight yourself before viewing this tutorial video; for all I know, there is a way to get to orbit with more Delta-V in the tank, but this is the way that works for me.

0:08 - Ignition of first stage engines T+0:0
0:23 - Launch tower release T+0:15
0:33 - Begin gravity-turn T+0:25
1:38 - Point nose toward ~50*, hold until time-to-apoapsis TTA is greater than 50 seconds. Fly into prograde vector to keep TTA under 90 seconds. T+1:30
3:58 - Action group 6 toggles RAPIERS into anaerobic mode at around 20km of altitude. T+3:50
4:38 - Jettison air-breathing engines. T+4:30 Maintain TTA between 50-90 seconds.
7:03 - Jettison fairing between 40-50km. T+6:55
7:53 - Deploy solar panels, etc. using action group 7. T+7:45
8:28 - Jettison RAPIERS. T+8:20
8:43 - Begin coast-to-circularize phase. T+8:35
1:15 - Burn to establish orbit, +~100 delta-V.
