Do you know how to talk about a hypothetical situation in Spanish? Or how to use Future in the Past? Make polite requests? For all these you will need the Spanish Conditional tense or Condicional.

It is quite easy to form, as you will need the whole infinitive of the verb (e.g. hablar, comer, escribir) and the endings of Pretérito Imperfecto (ía,ías,ía,íamos,íais,ían). For example:

Yo hablaría
Tú hablarías
El, ella,Usted hablaría
Nosotros hablaríamos
Vosotros hablaríais
Ello(a)s, Ustedes hablarían

Please note that the stress in all the endings has to be on the “í”.

Don’t forget about the irregular verbs, which are the same as in the Future tense:

salir - saldría
poner - pondría
poder - podría
tener - tendría
venir - vendría
querer - querría
haber - habría

etc.

When do you use Condicional in Spanish?

1. When you talk about a hypothetical situation:
Imagínate que te has ganado una lotería. ¿Qué comprarías?
Imagine you won a lottery. What would you buy?
2. When you want to give advice in a polite way:
Deberías ayudarle. No deberías fumar. Yo que tú, hablaría con él.
You should help him. You shouldn’t smoke. If I were you, I would talk to him.
3. When you want to make a polite request:
Podrías abrir la ventana, por favor?
Could you open the window, please?
Te importaría llevarme a la estación?
Do you mind taking me to the station?
4. When you want to express the Future in the Past:
Creía que sería útil. I thought it would be useful.
Me dijo que vendría más tarde. He told me he would arrive late.
