Windy day, shallow water, and the challenge of Matlacha Pass — this late-afternoon fishing trip turned into a real adventure.

With winds blowing over 20 mph and an incoming tide, I decided to stay tucked inside the protected backwaters on the east side of Matlacha Pass, between Pine Island and Cape Coral, Florida. The shallow flats, winding creeks, and mangrove edges made for a perfect test of patience and skill.

The goal was simple: find bait and maybe hook into a redfish before sunset. But nature had other plans. As the light faded, the wind calmed just enough to reveal something special — tarpon rolling in the distance. What started as a search for bait turned into a peaceful, unexpected evening chasing topwater strikes.
