Porsche Electrifies Its Best-Seller: 2025 Macan 4S Review

Porsche's venerable Macan has long been the brand's cash cow, consistently topping sales charts since its introduction. Now, the German automaker is taking a bold step into the future with the all-electric 2025 Macan lineup. We recently got behind the wheel of the midrange Macan 4S, and it's clear that Porsche isn't just dipping its toes into the EV waters – it's diving in headfirst.

Powertrain and Performance
The Macan 4S sits comfortably between the base Macan 4 and range-topping Macan Turbo. It boasts a dual-motor setup with a new, more potent rear motor paired with a 600-amp silicon carbide pulse inverter. This combination, along with the front motor shared with other Macan EVs, results in a stout 442 horsepower (330 kW) in normal driving. Engage Launch Control, and you'll unleash up to 509 hp (380 kW) of overboost power.

The results are impressive: 0-60 mph blasts by in just 3.9 seconds, and the 4S tops out at 149 mph. While these aren't quite Turbo numbers, they're more than enough to pin you to your seat and leave most traffic in your rear-view mirror.

Charging and Range
Built on Porsche's new PPE platform, the Macan 4S utilizes an 800-volt electrical architecture. This allows for DC fast charging at up to 270 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in as little as 21 minutes under ideal conditions. While official EPA range figures aren't available yet, expect the 4S to offer competitive numbers for the luxury electric SUV segment.

Ride and Handling
True to its Porsche DNA, the Macan 4S shines when the road gets twisty. Standard adaptive air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) provides a composed ride that can be tailored to your preferences.

Opt for the available rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), and you'll have an SUV that can carve corners with sports car-like precision.

The Macan 4S benefits from Porsche's latest electronically controlled Traction Management (ePTM) system. This advanced all-wheel drive setup can shuttle power between axles five times faster than traditional systems, ensuring optimal grip in all conditions.

Design and Interior
Exterior styling evolves the Macan's familiar shape with a more aerodynamic focus, achieving an impressive 0.25 drag coefficient. Inside, the Macan 4S embraces the digital age with Porsche's new Driver Experience interface. A 12.6-inch curved instrument display, 10.9-inch central touchscreen, and an optional passenger display create a tech-forward cockpit. The available augmented reality head-up display adds an extra layer of futuristic flair.

Material quality is top-notch, as expected from Porsche. New customization options, including a "Themes" app, allow drivers to coordinate ambient lighting with exterior paint colors for a personalized touch.

Practicality
Despite its performance credentials, the Macan 4S doesn't forget its SUV roots. An optional off-road design package increases approach angles and ground clearance, making light off-road excursions a possibility. Cargo space figures haven't been released, but expect similar utility to the outgoing gas-powered Macan.

The Verdict
The 2025 Porsche Macan 4S successfully translates the brand's sports car ethos into the electric age. It offers exhilarating performance, cutting-edge technology, and the practicality expected from a luxury SUV. While purists may lament the loss of internal combustion, the Macan 4S proves that Porsche's electric future is bright.

Starting at $84,900, the Macan 4S isn't cheap. However, for those seeking a no-compromise electric SUV that's equally at home on twisty back roads as it is on the daily commute, it's a compelling option. The 2025 Macan 4S hits U.S. dealerships in Q4 2024, and we expect it to be a strong contender in the increasingly crowded luxury electric SUV market.
