Faulty ABS Sensor Results In ABS Malfunction Error On The Cluster Meter

We had this Volkswagen Polo visit one of our MotoFyx car repair workshop for an annual service along with a concern relating to that of an ABS malfunction light flashing on the car’s cluster meter. In order to have this concern diagnosed and resolved at the earliest, the car owner reached out to us for immediate assistance.

Upon a detailed inspection of the car by our expert technicians, OBD scanning revealed DTC’s relating to a fault in the rear right ABS sensor, with the faulty ABS sensor needing an immediate replacement, in order to resolve the concern.

*What is an ABS sensor?
The anti-lock braking system (ABS) uses an ABS sensor which is attached onto either the wheels or onto the axle to measure the rotational speed of the wheels
Most ABS sensors contain a toothed ring and magnet that’s enclosed with a coil
Contact between the magnet and ring creates an electric field, which turns into a signal that is sent to the ABS controller
The ABS controller determines the speed of each wheel or axle. This information is then transmitted to the car’s ECM
When the ECM sees that a wheel is locking up, the ABS system is then activated
If a car is also equipped with traction control, the ABS sensor helps control the movement of the car in precarious situations. Hence in instances where the ABS sensor turns faulty, there is also a traction control error over the cluster meter along with an ABS error

*Signs of a faulty ABS sensor:
A car consists of 4 ABS sensors, 1 on each wheel, should any 1 of the ABS sensor turn faulty, an indication of ABS malfunction error comes up over the cluster meter to alert the driver that the ABS safety feature is no longer active and that the sensor is to be further inspected

*Consequences of driving with a bad ABS sensor:
ABS safety feature gets disabled
Malfunction light on cluster
Vulnerability on wet roads

*Solution:
The worn out ABS sensor was replaced with a new sensor
