STORYLINE:
China on Wednesday called on the U.S. to stop making “unfounded accusations” after the US ambassador to NATO warned of Beijing and Moscow's challenges to the unity of the military alliance.

Ambassador Julianne Smith said in a recent interview that China and Russia were “increasingly sharing a toolkit” to “divide…the trans-Atlantic partners.”

But at the daily briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning pushed back against this allegation, urging the U.S. to stop “creating imaginary enemies" and to refrain from using NATO "as a tool to maintain hegemony and mess up the world”.

Separately, Mao said the country’s medicines and testing kits could “generally" meet demand, after the U.S. State Department offered to share COVID-19 vaccines with China to stem soaring infections across the country.

China is seeing a surge of cases after the government last week eased some of the world’s strictest COVID-19 containment measures.

Mao also again defended her country's COVID response, and indicated that the government would “provide more convenience" for cross-border travel "in light of developments of the situation”.

Her comment followed rumors that Beijing was expected to further ease its quarantine policy on inbound travelers early next year.

China has been requiring those arriving from abroad to be quarantined at a hotel or private home since the pandemic broke out three years ago.
