Real World Excel VBA Project: Can Excel VBA Save The NHS? Part 1

Can Excel VBA help save the NHS? In this video series, I work with an NHS doctor to scope out and build an Excel VBA application to solve a problem in an NHS hospital in the UK.

It's funny being an Excel content creator. Sometimes your best stuff - the things Excel VBA learners simply HAVE to know - does not get much attention. Perhaps it's because people want to learn the latest new technique in Excel - XLOOKUP, or Power BI.

I would invite you to consider - do you really need to know all of these techniques? Perhaps there is more to Excel VBA programming than simply knowing lots of tools?

At Tiger, we say 'Spreadsheets Are For Humans'. In other words, the impact of your Excel VBA is limited not by any technical constraint, but by your ability to talk about Excel's capabilities with people. I have seen SO many skilled programmers struggle on real-world projects because of a reticence to engage with managers. By the same token, I know plenty of successful consultants who have small Excel VBA toolkit, but massive really world impact because of their interpersonal skills.

So, how do you get better at this critical skill? I have done 100s of Excel VBA projects over the years and have explored and structured problematic situations with managers all over the world, before implementing an Excel VBA-based solution. I know better than most that if the initial conversations do not go well, the project is likely to be problematic. In this video, I show my approach to a 'first client meeting' for Excel VBA projects.

Note how I make notes in front of the customer to show my understanding (or lack thereof) and to get clarifications. I love this approach which I have found to be very powerful over the years. Yes - your Excel VBA project has to start with an empathetic and non-judgemental approach based on listening and exploration of the situation. Focus on purpose and identify key issues - how does the customer feel? What are the headaches?

Forget the technical stuff (we MIGHT get to do a bit of that later) Spreadsheets Are For Humans!
