Turkey has begun serial production of its indigenously developed Akya heavyweight torpedo, Atmaca surface-to-surface anti-ship guided missile, and Sapan anti-aircraft air-defence missile for turkish navy

A contract signing ceremony to start mass producing the three weapon systems, which were developed by Turkish manufacturer Roketsan, was held on 20 January, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense confirmed the same day.

In development since 2009, Roketsan's Akya, achieved initial operational capability on 27 December 2023, after completing its first successful test-firing with a live warhead from the Turkish Navy's first-of-class Type 209-1400 diesel-electric submarine, TCG Preveze. During the test, which took place in the eastern Mediterranean, Akya was launched from Preveze and hit the decommissioned Cherokee-class tugboat TCG Gazal, with pinpoint accuracy from a distance of 12,000 yd, and sank it.

The Akya Heavy Weight Turpedo, is a new-generation 533 mm submarine-launched anti-ship and anti-submarine torpedo, with an overall length of around 7 m, a weight of 1,500 kg, a top speed of more than 45 kt, and a maximum range of more than 50 km. It features an integrated active/passive homing head with acoustic counter-countermeasure capability, is fully autonomous and fibre-optic wire-guided, and uses wake-homing guidance against surface targets.

Akya, a new-generation heavyweight torpedo developed by Roketsan for the Turkish Navy, and It will replace the torpedoes of type Mk 14. Mk 23. Mk 24 (Tigerfish) Mod 2. Mk 37 Mod 2. and SST-4.

Atmaca, is an all weather, long range, precision strike, anti-ship cruise missile, developed by Turkish missile manufacturer Roketsan. The Atmaca enters service with the Turkish Navy to gradually replace the country's existing inventory of Harpoon missiles. The Surface-to-surface version of Atmaca is Kara Atmaca.


The missile makes use of its global positioning system G P S, inertial navigation system, barometric altimeter and radar altimeter to navigate towards its target, while its active radar seeker pinpoints the target with high precision.

With a range of more than 220 kilometres, this guided missile poses a major threat for targets situated beyond the line of sight due to its high explosive fragmentation warhead. Its modern data-link provides ATMACA with the ability to 3D mission planning, update targets, reattack and terminate the mission. Missile is ultra sea-skimming as it approaches the target. The missile's engines are manufactured by the Turkish Kale Group, and the Kale KTJ-3200 engine used by the first versions of the missile is produced in Türkiye as ITAR-Free. Several tests of this missile have been successfully carried out in several test versions.

while The Sapan air defense missile. is intended to replace the Evolved Seasparrow Missile, a surface-to-air weapon made by R T X, formerly known as Raytheon Technologies. Derived from Roketsan's Hisar R F surface-to-air missile, the Sapan entered service with the navy for the frigate T C G Istanbul, and Sapan is said to boast a range exceeding 35 kilometers (22 miles), the company has not disclosed specific specifications for this missile
