On Measuring, Modeling and Analyzing Healthcare Systems in Real-Time: From Small Measurements through Big Data to Analytics

The lecture is on healthcare systems, but in fact pertaining to services in general. The focus is on operational performance -- e.g. patient flow and system congestion, but operational characteristics also serve as surrogates for financial, psychological and clinical performance. The scientific goal is the creation of principles and tools that support system engineering and management. And the means for achieving this goal is marrying theory with data.
More specifically, I am modeling a service system as a processing network; this is natural for capturing the operational tradeoff that is at the core of any service, namely quality vs. efficiency, possibly augmented with fairness or profitability. The ultimate goal, therefore, is a platform for online creation of data-based models -- simulation and analytical. This platform will be accessible to researchers, students and practitioners. And its prerequisites include, first and foremost, measurements of individual events (e.g. patient-physician transactions), which then support inference of model primitives, structure and protocols. The above goals are all pursued at the Technion IE&M SEE Laboratory (SEE = Service Enterprise Engineering).
