Medication insecurity occurs when a patient is unable to take their medication as prescribed and affects about 7% of the US population. Families with lower incomes are especially affected as they face difficult decisions of paying for their medication or supporting their families. Recently a new online pharmacy opened with a fixed profit margin providing access to generic medications at a greatly reduced price. Generic medications provide the same benefits and effects as name brand medications but are manufactured by companies without the high research and development costs of the drug discoverer.

Should fair and equitable access to medications be a public health service?
How do you balance the need of:
pharmaceutical companies to post a profit for investors and invest in future research and development of new medications
Government and Insurance Companies to minimize long-term healthcare costs and societal costs of an “unwell” population.
Patients to have a good quality of life while supporting their families
