During underground nuclear tests in the 1950s, scientists accidentally created one of the fastest objects ever recorded: a manhole cover. In a test known as Operation Plumbbob, a nuclear device was detonated deep underground. The shaft leading down to the bomb was sealed with a heavy steel cap – essentially a manhole cover welded in place.

When the bomb exploded, the intense heat and pressure instantly turned surrounding rock into gas, creating an immense upward force. The shockwave travelled up the shaft at supersonic speed, propelling the steel cap with it. Calculations estimated that the manhole cover shot upwards at about six times Earth’s escape velocity, or roughly 200,000 km per hour.

The object was briefly captured in one frame of a high-speed camera before disappearing from view. It was never found, leading to speculation that it either burned up in the atmosphere due to friction or flew straight out into space.

This event demonstrates the sheer explosive force of underground nuclear detonations and the unexpected physics phenomena they can produce. Though not intended as an experiment in propulsion, it remains one of the most dramatic examples of sudden acceleration ever recorded in human history.
