Title: Binary Star Systems

Abstract: When we look up at the sky, we see many stars on a good night. Perhaps you might be familiar with the famous Alcor-Mizar binary pair that can be resolved with the naked eye. The brightest star in the night sky, Sirius, is also in a binary pair with a white dwarf. In fact, it is estimated that up to 85% of stars in the universe are in binary systems or multiple star systems. But what’s so special about binary stars do you ask? Well, there is quite a lot. Binary stars are very important for our understanding of the astrophysics of stars. The well-known models of stellar evolution like the HR diagram, have been developed on the basis of only a few, very well-known stars, whose physical properties have been accurately measured. Quite a small sample to represent a very large population! Thus, we need extremely accurate observations of many more stars. This is where binaries play an important role. Binaries provide accurate measurement of stellar properties of component stars, which helps in refining our current models and knowledge. This talk will cover some basic physics of binaries, their types, and evolution.
