In this interview, we sit down with Professor Adrian Smith from Sussex Energy Group, University of Sussex. Adrian Smith is a Professorial Research Fellow in Technology & Society at the Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex. Adrian does research for a variety of public, private and civil society funders. Most of that research analyses the politics and governance of innovations for sustainability, and where Adrian has particular interests is in grassroots initiatives in the transformation of complex social and technological systems.

Following on from a seminar Adrian delivered to Climate Outreach, we interview Adrian about smart, and inclusive, local energy systems, and the wider project; Responsive Organising for Low Emission Societies (ROLES).

This interview focuses on the challenges, opportunities and current level of public engagement around implementing smart local energy systems. We discuss engaging with the public on decarbonisation, decentralisation, and digitalisation as the three main action areas for transforming our energy systems, as well as concerns around trust. We also delve into the barriers to ensuring inclusion, representation and fairness in the use of smart local energy systems.
