Guest bio: Dr. Helen Kales, Chair of Psychiatry at University of California, Davis is a fellowship-trained, board-certified geriatric psychiatrist. She has special clinical interest in the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Her research focuses on Dementia care (improving delivery of care and reducing caregiver burden), assessment and management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, psychotropic pharmacoepidemiology, later-life depression and racial disparities in later-life mental health and dementia treatment.

She has led the psychiatric field in understanding the risks of using antipsychotic and other psychiatric medications in people with dementia. However as she traveled the country presenting her research, Dr. Kales recognized it was not enough to simply tell providers, staff and family caregivers to avoid the use of these medications. Instead, it is imperative to help caregivers better understand, identify and treat the underlying causes of behavioral and psychologic symptoms of dementia (BPSD) rather than resorting to the knee-jerk use of medication. Her solution, The DICE Approach is now used worldwide by caregivers and memory care facilities to provide behavioral-based solutions.
