Police Minister Senzo Mchunu took the stand at the Madlanga Commission, defending his highly controversial decision to disband the National Political Killings Task Team (NPKTT) — a move that shocked security experts and triggered nationwide debate.

Mchunu testified that the task team was always temporary, created in 2018 as an interim project, and that a 2019 work-study report recommended integrating it into SAPS’ Murder and Robbery Unit.
He argued the unit had become irregular, operating without renewal for more than two years, and that keeping it alive made no operational sense.

But the commission is probing whether the shutdown was influenced by allegations of political interference, alleged links to accused tenderpreneur Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, and claims by KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that the move protected syndicate members.
