At KIDS HI, we honor the unique strengths and stories of every child in our island community. When it comes to supporting keiki with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), compassionate care begins with understanding and connection — not assumptions.

Here are some respectful Do’s & Don’ts for caring for children with IDD:

✅ DO:
• Build daily structure & rhythms that bring comfort 
• Communicate clearly — visual cues and calm tones help a lot 🗣️
• Celebrate every small step forward 🎊
• Foster independence with encouragement, not pressure 🌱
• Offer patience, space, and time — healing doesn’t rush 

❌ DON'T:
• Don’t assume silence means a lack of understanding 🙅‍♂️
• Don’t focus only on what’s “challenging” — look for the child’s brilliance 🌈
• Don’t force transitions — support them slowly and gently 
• Don’t speak about them instead of to them 🙋‍♂️
• Don’t forget: they are listening, feeling, and learning — always
