I thought it would be fun for today’s video to show how I taught Pabst the “touch” command.

I think of the Touch command as a building block behavior for my dog. It’s really simple to train, and can help shape more complex behaviors later on in your dogs training.

When I did this for Pabst for the very first time- I started out by asking him easy things he already knew by then like sit or come and charging up his reward. In other words- lettin him know hey I am asking you to do stuff now and there’s something good in it for you.

Now that I have his attention I hold the treat and or rub the treat on one hand- takes some sly work, but you use an open hand and present it to him. He will likely move to sniff my hand thinking there is a treat in it. When his nose touches my hand I reward from the other hand. You repeate this enough until the open hand presented in front of him + the verbal command is enough to prompt him to touch your hand with his nose.

There are many approaches to this type of command and you can use any word or hand motion you want- this is just what worked well for us.
