How To Tackle Literature Questions

Literature questions in an English exam can be a bit of a handful, so here’s a guide on how to go about answering them.

First, you’ve got to work out what the questions is about. Usually it’s either asking for information about the characters, what the text is about, the importance of where the text takes place, or what skills the writer uses to influence the reader. Next, break the question down into bullet points to make it easier for you to answer. Sometimes the examiners will be really lovely and print a list of bullet points for you. Make a plan based on your bullet points.

Your introduction should come next; keep it brief. The rest of your essay should deal with your bullet point list in order and back up what you said in your introduction. Stick to one idea for each paragraph and make sure you include your personal response. This is what you think the author is trying to make the reader feel with their writing. In your conclusion sum up the main point of your essay.
