In today’s discussion, we share how we are feeling about once again meeting people face to face and what we have noticed about behaviour. The potential excitement turned to real disappointment once we realised that we weren’t actually going back into inviting office spaces and seeing smiling faces!

We have spotted that some organisations are surveying their teams and asking whether people prefer to work at home or in the office. In our view, the issue is not as binary as that! Some team members, when answering such a question may assume they would go back to an open plan office environment, where they can wander the corridors and chat over desks. But in reality, our observations out in the workplace this week is that ‘going back’ may mean 60% fewer people in the office, social distancing and indoor mask-wearing – that’s not the office environment people remember and yearn to return to?

So helping people to think through what will work going forward in the new context is crucial.

We also reflect on how might different behaviours and rule interpretations impact when we start to get back to work together, in the same place? We are certainly seeing real variation and inconsistency when approaching situations…both inside and outside of work. How might others’ rule interpretations and behaviours impact our relationships?

I guess our message is, there is a new layer of additional complexity that leaders need to think through. When engaging with your teams on how and where they work in future, please consider that and share what you know about what a return in 2021 may actually look like. Next week we will share ways in which you can successfully engage your teams in this thinking.
