Описание к видео Debunking Processed Food Myths with Science | Dr. Shatadru Sengupta at AIFPA’s 80th Conference

Dr. Shatadru Sengupta, Chief Legal Officer at Hardcastle Restaurants Pvt. Ltd., addressed the audience on the theme of countering negativity and myths around processed foods. Drawing from over three decades of legal experience—most of it in the food industry—he emphasized the importance of positive, science-based communication to address consumer misconceptions.

Dr. Sengupta explained that while processed foods are often unfairly criticized, they offer convenience, safety, consistent quality, and nutritional value. He argued that the definition of “processed” is misunderstood, as even washing a carrot at home is technically a form of processing.

He highlighted how additives and preservatives, often demonized in public discourse, play essential roles in food safety and stability. The misinformation spread by influencers, he said, ignores scientific principles such as acceptable thresholds and usage levels. He criticized the trend of rejecting all processed foods without scientific basis and called for greater awareness of food science among consumers.

He also challenged the myth that home-cooked food is inherently safer than commercially processed food, citing better hygiene standards in many industrial facilities. He warned against categorizing food into hierarchical “good vs. bad” labels, like HFSS or UPF, which leads to fear-based decision-making rather than informed choices.

Dr. Sengupta concluded by calling on all stakeholders—including regulators, industry, academia, and influencers—to prioritize scientific evidence in public communication and policy, and to foster balanced narratives that promote both health and trust in food processing.
