ENKA, N.C. -- It's a noise complaint heard in two Enka-Candler neighborhoods starting in February.

Monday night's public meeting at Enka Middle School addressed that noise coming from Jacob Holm Industries along Sand Hill Road.

About 100 people from both Enka Village and Biltmore Lake neighborhoods attended the meeting with concerns.

"It sounded like my next door neighbor was vacuuming like constantly all day," Ashley Tweed of Enka Village said.

"The noise is quite frankly like a jet plane being flown over your house at all hours of the day," Nelson Sartoris of Biltmore Lake said.

The noise started from that plant when Jacob Holm Industries began manufacturing a second line of products, which is flushable toilet wipes.

"It's an emotional issue. People's quality of life has changed," Jeff Sellers, who is the VP of operations at Jacob Holm Industries, said. "And so we hear them and we're going to look into it and see what we can do."

How it can be fixed, like what are the options and solutions, is something the plant isn't commenting on right now.

Operations could be 24/7 by August, making the noise longer but not louder, according to Sellers.

"I think we can decrease. I don't know if we can eliminate the noise completely," Sellers said. "But I think we can decrease the sound."

Until there's a change in the volume, these homeowners say there will be no peace and quiet.

"We will see this to the end. I think Jacob Holm needs to know that," Sartoris said.

Officials with the Enka Village Commission say another meeting will be scheduled sometime this summer to get an update from Jacob Holm Industries on how they're working to fix this issue.
