These stories demonstrate how the Soroptimist model of economic empowerment through access to education, and the Canadian values of diversity, equality, inclusion and belonging, accelerate economic freedom.
Presented as a Parallel Event at NGO CSW68 by the Eastern & Western Canada Regions of Soroptimist International.
Moderated by Bonita Zarillo, Canadian Soroptimist and Member of Parliament. Featuring:
Maryam Osadi, who remembers the bomb raids as a young school girl in Tehran, Iran in the 1970s. In Canada, Immigrant Services and a Soroptimist International Live Your Dream Award helped her to upgrade her education and find meaningful service as an immigrant advocate.
Arielle Kayabaga, who fled Burundi amid civil war as a child, and experienced first-hand the challenges newcomers face in dealing with insecure housing and precarious employment in an unfamiliar place. Now she is London, Ontario’s first Black woman Member of Parliament.
Temilade Olayiwola, who came to Canada driven by the goal of a better life for her two young girls. She discovered that with the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award, she was able to build a better life for herself also, currently finishing her Bachelor of Social Work (BSW).
Khayanga Wasike, from Musembe village in Lugari district, Kenya. She realized the Canadian Soroptimist Dream It, Be It Program for Girls would help prevent women’s poverty in Lugari, and exported it to her Women & Girls’ Leadership/ Mentorship program.
