In 1927, Austrian inventor Eduard Haas III was looking for an alternative to smoking. Through his efforts, the refreshing and popular PEZ candy was born. Originating from the German word for peppermint, “pfefferminz,” the word “PEZ” was created when Haas took the first, middle, and last letters of the word and combined them. After hitting American shelves in 1952 with great success, the candy company arrived on American soil by establishing a factory in Connecticut in 1973. Interestingly, the famous PEZ shape was originally round and called ‘PEZ Drops,’ but was quickly changed to its brick shape we know and love today. The first traditional head dispenser to be released was the Halloween Witch in 1957, and Popeye was the first licensed character to be featured on a dispenser in 1958.
