"I remember going to other churches and sitting in the benches and not knowing what they were saying because there were no interpreters available at that church. What I saw when I first sat down was Maria, Mother Maria. She inspired me so much, with so much faith. Something that I had never experienced before. It was heartwarming to have her interpret the Mass. I was in awe."

"When I am up there interpreting, it's not me. It's the Holy Spirit in me. You have to feel it. It's more of expressions and non-manual markers that you have to do and feel so that person can really feel inspired... The same way the hearing feel it, too, the deaf can feel it, as well. "
SOUNDBITE (English) Lidia Martinez, deaf congregant:
"Just as Jesus Christ was accepting of poor people, sick people, blind, the deaf -- a diverse group -- it's the same thing. I feel connected to this church."
