What Is a Tax Levy in Calumet City?
A tax levy is the amount of money Calumet City requests from property owners each year through property taxes to fund city services.
Every year, the city council votes on this total dollar amount. In 2025, that amount was $31 million.

Is This an Increase?
Even if the levy amount stays the same as the previous year, your individual property taxes can still go up. That’s because:

If your property value increases, your share of the levy increases.

The city is still collecting the same total amount, but it is distributed differently based on new assessments.

So while the city can say, “We didn’t raise the levy,” residents can still end up paying more.

Where Does the Money Go?
Of the $31 million:
About half of the funds are essential services, such as police and Fire.
The rest goes to:
City insurance
The public library
Other city-related expenses

Why It Matters
The tax levy directly affects your property tax bill and determines how much money the city collects to operate. While some of these services are critical, others may not be essential—especially during a budget deficit (Calumet City is currently facing a $7 million shortfall).
