THE *80's were a special time for the Dramatics. In 1982, the ensemble transitioned to Capitol Records, crafting their inaugural album without Don Davis, during which Banks assumed the role of producer. The group underwent changes, with only Banks, Ford, and Mayes remaining, following the departures of L.J. Reynolds in 1981 and Larry Demps' pursuit of teaching and family commitments. Subsequently, when Ron Banks explored a solo career, the group disbanded briefly. However, a reformation took place in the mid-1980s, where Howard rejoined Reynolds, Mayes, Ford, and Banks for recordings under Fantasy Records.

In 2012, two separate iterations of the Dramatics emerged. L.J. Reynolds led one faction with members Winzell Kelly, Leon Franklin, Donald Albert, and Levell Thompson. Concurrently, the other faction, steered by original member Willie Lee Ford, included Rick Littleton, Michael Brock, Douglas Gaddy, and Gregory Finley. Notably, in 2017, long-time member Paul Hill from George Clinton's Parliament Funkadelic band joined Willie Ford's Dramatics. Ford's group upheld the original quintessential essence of the Dramatics, focusing on the signature five-part harmonies and dynamic vocal presence until Ford's passing at the age of 68 on May 28, 2019.

Meanwhile, L.J. Reynolds' iteration showcased Reynolds' vocal talent and incorporated music from his solo career into their performances. On September 24, 2018, Reynolds legally obtained trademark rights to the name "the Dramatics."

The group's achievements were formally recognized with their induction into the R&B Music Hall of Fame at Cleveland State University's Waetejen Auditorium on August 17, 2013.

Additionally, the Dramatics featured prominently in the 2017 film "Detroit," directed by Kathryn Bigelow, which dramatizes the Algiers Motel incident.
