Super Kmart - "Free Spree!" (Commercial - 1994)

Here's a commercial for Super Kmart, the hypermarket form of Kmart. It seems the mid 90's was when every store was trying out the hypermarket concept. Kmart was the first national chain to do so with it's "Super" concept. Walmart would follow a year later and Target would join in 5 years afterward. This was basically a Kmart with a full grocery section, as well as a Little Caesar's restaurant. When Sears and Kmart merged in 2004, these locations also had an appliance section, Sears Portrait Studio, and Sears Auto Center added. Super Kmart was renamed Kmart Supercenter as well.

Other store chains that have hypermarket formats include Meijer which became exclusively hypermarket afterward. Sears also introduced a few prototype hypermarkets called Sears Grand in 2005. Local chains Jewel and Dominick's were the first stores altogether with their hypermarket formats. Jewel had a concept called Jewel Grand Bazaar in the 1970's and Dominick's later had Omni Superstore in the 80's-90's.

A new smaller concept of this format was being tested in Chicago called Kfresh which featured a smaller grocery section and more prepackaged foods. One location in Chicago had this format before it closed in 2018. A location in Willowbrook was also planned for expansion to carry the prototype format as well, but closed after another company offered to buy the property for $12 million.

Sadly this format no longer exists as the last location in Warren, OH closed in early 2018.

This aired on local Chicago TV in 1994.
