US Highway 66 is the road that needs no introduction. Originally running from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, CA, the road traveled more then two thousand miles all the way. The road rose to fame with the Dust Bowl of the 1930's because of residents seeking a better life in Los Angeles. In The Grapes of Wrath, the road was given the nickname of 'The Mother Road', and was made into a musical tune by the Nat Cole Trio's hit '(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66.

The road traveled eight states, and out of 2400 miles, Arizona had the longest stretch of highway, spanning 401 approximate miles across the northern half of the state. Out of those 401 miles, 158 are still linked together making for the longest continuous, uninterrupted segment of Route 66 between the State Line and Ash Fork. The oldest alignment of the road entered at Topock, then traveled northeast to Oatman, situated in the black mountains (known for wild burros), through the city of Kingman. Departing Kingman, the road traveled through Peach Springs and Seligman, the town credited with saving Arizona's stretch, mostly along modern Arizona State Route 66 (the portion in Yavapai County has been returned to the county for maintenance.

It then enters Williams, the gateway to the Grand Canyon, and shortly thereafter Flagstaff, the 'capital' of Northern Arizona. It then passed Winona and Winslow before reaching Holbrook and Chambers and eventually the New Mexico State Line at Lupton, where is picks up the New Mexico State Route number of 118 at the state line.

Today we travel the second half of modern State Route 66 from Truxton to Seligman. Minor upgrades included a few segments of divided highway have been made to this segment, which runs through the historic town of Peach Springs on the Hualapai Indian Reservation. We pass through three different counties on this stretch: we start in Mohave County, we then briefly cross into Coconino County (we will return to in later) to end up in Yavapai County, where Arizona State Route 66 continues on in signage only as the road was turned over to the county in the 1990's.
