Here’s an important point about fartlek workouts: If you blow up in the first few fartlek workouts, I think that's fine.

The athletes that I work with this winter, and if you go back to the athletes I worked with this summer, if you blow up in a fartlek workout early in the season, that's fine.

If you ran too hard in the first two-thirds of the workout and then you're decelerating in the last third, you're learning that skill of running by feel.
Fast forward a month later whether it's a long run or a progression run, you don't want a threshold run to be something where you're blowing up that workout.

So if we go backward, let's learn with our fartlek workouts how to run by feel. Okay.

So this is the progression I work with. We do fartlek runs. Then we do progression runs. Then oftentimes the third week, we'll go back to a fartlek run and then a progression run. Then we'll do a threshold run. Then sometimes we might do some aerobic repeats.
