Ag Equipment Technology students in AGEN333 Equipment Test and Development prepare themselves for careers in product development and test environments. In this course, students learn engineering principles of equipment test and development and apply them (along with what they have learned in previous classes and work experiences) to a development project. Working with a sponsor, student teams define, design, fabricate, and validate a new (or modifications to an existing) piece of equipment.
One of the projects this year was a roller-crimper that terminates the fall-planted cover crop prior to planting corn. Students Ryan Sanders, Alex Mulcare, and Justin Matthews worked with the project sponsor Kane Seamon, Crop and Equipment Manager of the SUNY Cobleskill college farm, to develop a 10-foot wide roller-crimper that is based on a design from the Rodale Institute. Kane is working with faculty, staff, and students from Plant Science, Environmental Management, Ag Business, and Ag Engineering Technology on a soil health field trial starting this summer to examine the effectiveness of mechanical cover crop termination to reduce or eliminate herbicide applications while improving soil health. If the results of the field trial show promise, students proposed a preliminary design concept to expand the 10-foot roller-crimper to 18 feet. This will likely be a project in next year’s AGEN333 class.
This video shows the 10' wide roller-crimper on the field rolling winter wheat on 07Jun21. Corn was planted into the rolled winter-wheat on 08Jun21. The experiment consists of 4 treatments, replicated 3 times:
1. The control was not rolled and sprayed with glyphosate at 32 oz/ac
2. Rolled with a weight of 230 lb/ft
3. Rolled with a weight of 160 lb/ft
4. Rolled (@230 lb/ac) with a glyphosate application of 8 oz/ac
