Socrates was a Greek philosopher who was renowned for his vast knowledge and wisdom. One day, a friend of his approached the wise man and said, "I just heard something about your friend." Do you want to learn more about it? ”
"Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to test the importance of what you're going to say," Socrate replied calmly. Allow it to pass the triple filter test. The first filter for your data is "truth." Are you certain, that everything you're about to tell me about my friend is true? ”
"No, no," the man replied, "I just heard about it somewhere."
"All right, so you're not sure about the veracity of the statement you're about to make. Let us now try the second filter, the Goodness filter. Is what you're about to tell me good? "Socrates said.
"Umm, no," the man replied softly.
"So you want to tell me something negative about my friend that you're not sure is true?" You failed the first two tests, but you may still pass if you pass the final filter, the usefulness filter. Is what you're about to tell me going to be of any use to me? ”
"No, not really," the man admitted shamefully.
"Well, if what you want to tell me isn't true, good, or even useful, why waste your time telling it to me at all?" Socrates concluded.
Although there is nothing wrong with discussing other people, it is what we discuss about them that is important. When engaging in a conversation about a third person, it is all too easy to fall into a pattern of unconscious criticism, doubt, and misunderstanding.
