Super Alloy 1 contains cadmium. Super Alloy 1 saved another piece of pot metal in just a couple of minutes. We were at a classic car swap meet, demonstrating our products (we’re definitely not the pop-can rods), when a gentleman approached our booth with a 1966 Chevy Nova SS exterior trim piece from the lower back panel. Sam had been searching for this rare piece for some time. He explained there were no aftermarket parts available for it, so when you can’t find the parts online, you head to a local vintage car swap meet and dig through a pile of used parts to find your treasure.
We noticed the part was broken and, judging by the chromed finish, we suspected it was made from zinc die-cast or pot metal. Sam snagged the part for just five dollars, as the seller didn’t realize its rarity or that pot metal could be repaired so easily. However, the Dremel tool died while we were trying to remove the chrome from the back, since Super Alloy 1 doesn’t bond to chrome.
It took less time to solder the zinc die-cast than it did to prepare the part. With a melting point half that of pot metal, Super Alloy 1’s low temperature didn’t even damage the chrome plating. Sam was able to remove the plating, repair the pitting under the chrome, nickel, and copper, and fix the break in the part. After that, he could easily have the part re-chromed, as the solder used in the process is commonly employed in plating shops worldwide.
So, the next time someone tells you that pot metal, galvanized metal, cast iron, pewter, or even joining pot metal to steel or copper to aluminum can’t be repaired—just tell them to MUGGY WELD IT!
