Rarely in modern history have so many been so desperate to flee, reshaping Europe and the world. Their journey began in war, poverty and oppression. They are fleeing, by the hundreds of thousands, from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran and Pakistan, a ceaseless flow of humanity driven by wars, insecurity, lack of opportunity and fear for the newly formed Islamic State. Their desperation is only matched by their fortitude and sense of hope. Now that he refugee crisis has reached Greece once more. I tried to document this dramatic situation. The pictures are taken in Kos, Lesvos, Leros, Athens and in their last stop here, the border of Idomeni, in Northern Greece. The images of these people are life lessons for all of us and the smiles we see in the faces of the children represent our hope for tomorrow while they reminds us that the world needs peace and love - that we should struggle for the ideals we were taking for granted until now. They don’t want to stay in Greece, they are aware of our problems - they continue their epic journey to Northern Europe, uncertain for what lies ahead, but still happy they managed it until here. I am deeply moved by their words and gratitude regarding the kindness that the Greek people has shown towards them.
No European country has been as battered as Greece in recent years and no European country has responded with as much consistent humanity to the refugee crisis. Greece experienced refugees and immigrants problems in the past and history now repeats itself. Many of us are children or grandchildren of refugees. We know the reasons that make these people flee their country and we know that this is not an option but a necessity. Volunteers, NGOs, simple people, left their lives and works aside and cooperated to help these caravan of refugees coming to our borders with inexhaustible humanism as fellows and supporters.
No country can face this problem alone, a problem that is the biggest since World War II, and it's growing. Inside this overwhelming crisis are the individual human stories — of care and family, in the face of lost education, lost home, lost future. The refugee flow can only be stopped in their own countries that are making them flee.
