My name is Eugene Shildkrot, and I’m an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology. The residency program training at the University of Virginia is unique in that we have a very broad-based representation of subspecialties in ophthalmology. I’m the only ocular oncologist in the state, and the residents working through my tumor clinic, oncology clinic, there’s only a handful of us in the country. And so most programs do not have that experience.

We have a UVA specialist, we have a full time ocular plastic specialist, and as such, the range of pathology that the residents see is really reflective of the complexity and the unique profile of the faculty that draws the patients from the entire state to University of Virginia, and as such, it makes a foundation for really strong, in-depth resident education.
