In 1896 Paris, renowned author Charles Regnier returns home after a series of exotic travels, only to find himself at the center of controversy when his latest bestseller draws the ire of the Ministry of Justice. On the very night of his arrival, a high-ranking official is gruesomely murdered in the city's shadowy streets, leaving the police baffled by the savage claw marks left behind. As rumors of a mythical "were-cat" spread, Inspector Severen remains skeptical of any supernatural involvement, suspecting Regnier of foul play. Meanwhile, Regnier’s own grip on reality wavers as he suffers disturbing hallucinatory blackouts, intensifying his fears that he may be entangled in a sinister conspiracy—or worse, that he may be losing his own mind.
