While generally I say 8 dbi omni-directional is the way to go, there are situations where a 9 dbi directional antenna makes sense. If one area has the best transmit scale so you want to focus on it, and using the highest allowed gain (9dbi) allows you to witness weaker signals and gives you the strongest beacons, then maybe that's your best bet. It's not cheap after all the fees, but L-Com has it.
