Laurel Hill is a quiet place. And the country roads outside of town aren't where you'd expect to find a scene like the one that took place on Mother's Day. What happened between a fourteen year old boy and his mother was nothing less than disturbing.

According to the mother, who wished to remain anonymous, "the DCF and law enforcement have said, at points, it's out of their hands until it got this far."

Deputies said the teen and his mother were found arguing about the location of her pets. The mother said the boy hit her in the arm and chest, and kicked her in the head. The sheriff's office said she had bruises and contusions consistent with that story.

Deputies then went looking for the pets. One dog was found dead from being hit in the back of the head. Two other dogs were found injured, one from a pellet gun and another stabbed by a screwdriver. A chicken was found dead with a wound from a pellet gun.

The boy then admitted to committing two other burglaries in the area, including one where he killed two parakeets and threw them into a lake. The boy's mother said that his father recently passed away.

She said she hopes this event will help turn his life around. "He's had episodes in the past. Jacob was doing very good until his father passed away. He started doing drugs, he started doing bad things."

She said she's already met with Children and Families representatives about his future. "And I told her today that he needed to be court-ordered to take counseling, to go to drug counseling, and to let's see this boy make something."

William Bishop of the State's Attorney's Office said when prosecuting juvenile cases, evaluating psychological triggers can be difficult, but necessary.

"Each case is different, it rises and falls on its own set circumstances. We have to evaluate, we always evaluate the circumstances of the child's upbringing, his current situation at home, and what are the possible resources that can be given to the child to rehabilitate the child."
