Overall, the Pup says something about the attempts of Buhl to establish itself as the manufacturer of state-of-the-art light airplanes. The company already had a track record building large, multi-passenger aircraft (Sedan, Airster, etc.), but sales were slowing so it set out to develop a high-tech airplane that would stand above the Aeronca C-3s and other rag-and tube flivvers of the day. Unfortunately, this was in 1928, the dawn of a period in history that wasn’t kind to entrepreneurs. Still, you have to give Buhl credit for trying. Buhl’s basic business was metal stamping, so it was natural that it would bring that skill into the process of building little airplanes. This is best seen in the large, one-piece stampings that form the guppy-like forward fuselage sections. The fuselage and overall design marked it as one of the most advanced light airplanes of the era. The LA-1 (Light Airplane-1) Buhl
Pup was certified in April 1931, but being ahead of its time didn’t help: The company went into receivership in late 1932 with an estimated 100 airframes having been completed or partially finished.
