Day One We kicked off our Hallstatt leg with a private car with MyDayTrip from Vienna. We took a detour to Aggstein Castle, perched high on a mountain with epic views and medieval vibes. On arrival in Hallstatt, we were dropped at the local parking lot, but a short walk brought us to Seewirt - Zauner, our cozy hotel right in the heart of the market square. Settling into this beautiful, historic setting was like stepping back in time. A wonderful dinner on the waterfront patio of Restaurant Am See before local wine on our hotel patio.
Day Two Our morning started unexpectedly with an icy shower (not every vacation moment is perfect!), but breakfast turned things around. We took the funicular up the mountain for panoramic views of Hallstatt and the lake. At the top, we relaxed with a cold beer and admired the scenery. Later, we rented an electric boat, where Captain Kirk navigated the entire lake in just under an hour—a peaceful and scenic ride! We strolled the quaint streets, sampled pastries, and even picked up our laundry from the local café (thanks to the chef moonlighting as a laundress!). An afternoon walk led us to the Charnel House (ossuary) for a humbling visit, followed by a sunset dinner at Restaurant Am See. Dessert and wine on our patio wrapped up an amazing day!
Day Three After a final breakfast and some morning photos of the cloudy, picturesque town, we enjoyed a last coffee before setting off. Another seamless MyDayTrip ride carried us deeper into the Austrian Alps to Innsbruck.
Note for anyone visiting Hallstatt (and this does go for anywhere!) - remember that you are visiting someone’s home and town. You might be visiting for a day - but they live here. If there are signs saying do not enter or please be quiet after hours, do it. While most people were lovely, we saw too many people walking on clearly private property, loudly yelling after hours, stopping in the street, blocking locals, and more. It is a honor and a privilege to be able to travel and to be able to visit places like this and I only hope that people start treating it so or the privilege might go away.

What started as 40 from august to august has expanded to the start of 2023 to August 2024. Due to other people planning things that we want to join… before August 2023. This is the celebration of “omg Kassie survived 40 years - we never thought it would happen.” Maybe the next 40, I’ll be more careful so it won’t be so surprising. 40 “experiences” have to be #1 unique, #2 require the day and night in the location to count, #3 that’s it.

Originally from Iowa (Kassie) and Kansas (Rick), we met in Kansas in 2005 and immediately found that we had so much in common - including our desire to someday see the world. We now live in NYC and quickly started catching up on travel after our first (just us) international trip to Iceland in 2015. We decided to start making videos for us and our family/friends to track our travels. Kassie is in Marketing, an Author (see her poetry + author videos), and Puppet Creator. Rick is an Engineer and Script Writer (see our current and coming puppet movies!)
