Salman the Persian (Persian: سلمان فارسی, romanized: Salman Al-Farsi (Arabic: سَلْمَان ٱلْفَارِسِيّ, romanized: Salmān al-Fārisī) was a Persian Companion of the Prophet Muhammad. He was raised as a Zoroastrian in the Sasanian Empire, then was attracted to Christianity, and then converted to Islam after meeting Muhammad in the city of Yathrib, which later became Medina. During some of his later meetings with the other Companions, he was referred to by the kunyah Abu ʿAbdullah "Father of Abdullah".
Māriyya bint Shamʿūn (Arabic: ماریة بنت شمعون), better known as Māriyyah al-Qibṭiyyah or al-Qubṭiyya (Arabic: مارية القبطية), or Mary the Copt, died 637, was an Egyptian woman who, along with her sister Sirin bint Shamun, was sent to the Islamic prophet Muhammad in 628 as a gift by Al-Muqawqis, a Christian governor of Alexandria, during the territory's Sasanian occupation. She and her sister were slaves.She spent the rest of her life in Medina and had a son, Ibrahim with Muhammad. The son died as an infant and she died almost five years later.

The mosque was built by Sawad ibn Ghanam ibn Ka'ab during the year 2 AH (623 CE)[1] and is one of the few mosques in the world to have contained two mihrabs (niches indicating the qibla) in different directions
