Japan Walk Tour

When we think about Japan, temples and shrines are common topics to come up. I visited one of the oldest shrines in Tokyo this time. The temple is called Okuni-tama Jinja Shrine, located in Fuchu City in Tokyo. Surprisingly, it is told that the origin of this temple was in the year 111, about 1910 years ago. This shrine is counted as one of five major shrines in Tokyo along with Meiji Jingu, Yasukuni Shrine, Hie Jinja, and Tokyo Daijingu.
Since this shrine has a long history, there are a lot of stories about it. One of them is that Ieyasu Tokugawa, who was the founder of Tokugawa Shogunate, planted a tree in Okuni-tama Jinja Shrine(4:30). Furthermore, inside the ground, as you can see in the video, there are multiple shrines and one of them is the Toshogu Shrine (18:45). This shrine tells the story of how when he died, his followers who transported his body made a resting stop in this specific shrine before they continued to Nikko, Tochigi.
This shrine is very accessible from central Tokyo. It takes less than 30 minutes from Shinjuku Station to get to this shrine by Keio line train.
If you want to visit historical shrines in Tokyo, this shrine is definitely one of your choices.
I hope you enjoy the video.
