Welcome aboard! When I learned that the Condor would retire the Boeing 757-300, it was clear that I had to fly on it one last time, so today, we are embarking on my last departure of the Condor Boeing 757-300 from Düsseldorf Airport. Like so many, the 757 holds a special place in my heart and I hope to still fly on them every now and then, even if it's the shorter 757-200.

In case you don't know, what makes this plane so special, except from it's slightly odd shape: when the 757-200 was designed, Boeing aimed for a successor to the great Boeing 727 but got a long list of demands from the airlines. Primarily, it was requested, that the plane could take of with a full passenger load from airports with particularly short runways like New York La Guardia and Washington National Airport and complete a cross-country flight to Los Angeles or San Francisco. At that time in the early 80ies, transcontinental flights were mostly operated by costly widebody aircraft, the older Boeing 737 series aircraft were lacking the range and the Airbus 320 was still in development. In Europe the aircraft became a success with holiday and charter airlines, so it was no surprise that Condor was the launch customer for the stretched 757. The last major chapter for the Boeing 757 family was the introduction of Aviation Partners Boeing Blended Winglets. The technical enhancement improved fuel burn and consequently increased range of the aircraft,

Over times, the Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 family were stretched and piece-by-piece took over the role of the 757, which eventually made the 757 obsolete and the production ended in 2004.

The skies over Europe are now just a little less exciting as one of the most exotic planes leaves the fleet of the airline, that transported so many Germans to and from their vacations for over 25 years.

💔 The End of an Era
Condor is in the process of retiring its entire Boeing 757-300 fleet, marking the end of the Boeing era for the airline after 35 years. These incredible long-bodied jets are being replaced by the new, more modern Airbus A320neo and A321neo family. The final scheduled 757-300 flights are expected in late October/early November (2025).

The 'Flying Pencil': The 757-300 is famously nicknamed the 'Flying Pencil' due to its incredibly long, narrow fuselage, measuring 54.5 meters in length—that's 7.1 meters longer than the standard 757-200!

Launch Customer: Condor was the launch customer for the Boeing 757-300 in 1996 and took delivery of its first jet in 1999.

Capacity King: It carries up to 275 passengers, making it a high-capacity narrow-body workhorse for Condor’s short- and medium-haul leisure routes to destinations like the Canary Islands and Mallorca.
