"Engelbert Schmid 64" Robert Schumann, Adagio und Allegro

Nach 25 Jahren Pause beim Hornblasen kam plötzlich die Gelegenheit, mich auf dem Horn nochmals fit zu trainieren und u. a. das Adagio/Allegro von Schumann aufzunehmen. Aus meiner Sicht soll dieses Stück anders interpretiert als es die Praxis der Live Konzerte dem Hornisten erlaubt. Der Solopart hat so wenig Pausen, dass der Hornsolist beim Live Konzert in erster Linie darauf achten muss, ausdauermäßig durchzukommen und deshalb nicht alle eigentlich gebotenen Nuancen souverän vortragen kann. Auch weicht meine Vorstellung der Interpretation dieses Stückes von der Praxis der Hornisten ab: Ich sehe mehr Rubati geboten als sich die Hornisten üblicherweise erlauben. Ich wollte nicht die Cellisten kopieren, aber es hat mich schon inspiriert, welche Freiheiten sie sich beim Vortrag dieses Werkes nehmen.
After 25 years of intermission in horn playing suddenly there came the chance to train myself fit again on the horn and among other pieces to record Robert Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro. In my view this piece should be interpreted differently to how the reality in live concerts allows the horn player to do. There are so few rests in the solo part that the first duty of the horn player is to find the stamina necessary to get through it and frequently this compromises their ability to explore the subtleties of the score. When cellists perform it, such problems melt away, and I have always been inspired by the considerable musical freedom they take. I did not wish to copy them, but my interpretation deviates from normal performance practice as I see more rubati implicit in the score than horn players usually allow themselves.
