Watch this cross border performance titled “Blessings from the mountains” with artists Forrest Wong and Yuji Kinoshita produced for Nagoya Culture Promotion Unit Bilateral Visual Art Exhibition: Nagoya x Penang.

Forrest Wong and Yuji Kinoshita together produced a work titled “4uto-c0rrec4”, a performative collaboration based on the idea of mapmaking and miscommunication. Their work consists of a pamphlet with a map based on Wong’s memories of Nagoya during his brief visit in 2020 and Kinoshita’s introduction to the lesser-explored parts of the city.

Blessings from the mountains
In situ performance

“Both Kinoshita and I (Forrest) love the mountains. We think mountains have good spirits and nutrients that have been nourishing humans since olden times. The sharing of stories about mountains reminded us of the experience of taking baths at sentos in Nagoya. I remember there was one in particular with a mural of Mount Fuji, where the bathers were soaking in the water with the reflection of the painted mountain. This image to me looked as if they were being blessed while they were taking baths. We try to relate the element of water in our everyday life experience by translating it into performances based on our personal relationship with water.”

山からの恵み
木下さんも私も山が好きです。山には昔から人に滋養を与える良い気と栄養が溢れていると考えられてきました。山についての物語を共有することで、名古屋での銭湯の記憶を思い出しました。それは富士山の壁画があり、その描かれた山が反射するお湯につかる人たちがいる銭湯です。私にとってそれはまるで、そのお湯に浸かっている人たちがお風呂に入りながら祝福されているようなイメージでした。水との個人的な関係を元にしたパフォーマンスへと変換することで、日常生活の中での水の要素を繋ぐことを試みます。

ABOUT NCPU

Now that movement is difficult due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are organising an online collaboration project so that artists and cities can interact with each other as well as an exhibition to display the outcome. We have brought together Penang Island, with its history of having developed as a free trade port, and Nagoya Port, which continues to thrive on trade, with the participation of 7 sets of artists from these 2 regions. Nagoya Culture Promotion Unit (NCPU) has been established in the 2 cities, and artworks resulting from joint research by the artists on the theme of Nagoya will be presented concurrently in Nagoya and Georgetown.
