This was our "Jig Thursday" selection from February 29, 2024. (Leap Day!) The Besom in Bloom is a perfect tune for the forthcoming Spring Equinox--
Besom is another name for broom (like the plant, which is a beautiful and invasive flowering shrub). It can also refer to a very special, ceremonial type of broom made from ash, willow, cherry, or hawthorn branches with sprigs of lavender, bay laurel and eucalyptus woven in. A magical way to do some Spring cleaning of the home and the psyche.

We first encountered this lovely gem in O’Neill’s Music of Ireland (from 1903). He presented it in A, though it’s nice like this (in D) on the flute. That’s how flute player Colm O’Donnell recorded it in the late 90s.

We started this 'series' on a diff social media platform. We wanted to share a few of our favorite tunes, and record them in a minute (so we could share the whole thing).
