Participatory Defense is a community organizing model for people facing charges, their families, and their communities to impact the outcome of cases and transform the landscape of power in the court system. Trained volunteers and facilitators give participants a deeper understanding of the justice process, what is expected from them at each stage, and assist them in preparing for meetings with their attorney, court dates, and other steps of the process.

Pitched by Amanda Davis & Carla Maragañon
Amanda was born and raised in Dayton and is a current Dayton resident. She has a BA from Wake Forest University and a Juris Doctor from University of Toledo. Amanda is very passionate about criminal justice reform which led her to her current position an Assistant Public Defender in the Montgomery County Public Defender’s Office.

Carla was born and raised in Cleveland, OH and moved to Dayton in 2013. She is a current resident of Dayton in the St. Anne’s neighborhood. Shae has a BA from Ohio University and a Juris Doctor from University of Akron. She believes that justice system only works if everyone is provided with competent legal counsel. This belief led her to her current position as an Assistant Public Defender in the Montgomery County Public Defender’s Office.
