In this video we’re going to illustrate how to test the integrated starter alternator or ISA used by Mercedes-Benz 48 volt mild-hybrid vehicles.

The ISA has 3-phase windings with 18 coils, one side for the starter and one for the alternator. You’ll need to perform this test when a fault code is stored to either condemn or rule out the ISA as the cause.

Common fault codes for Electric Machine A or Electric Machine B N179 ISA:
P0A6400 The current value of phase W of electric machine A is too low.
P0C1900 The torque of electric machine A deviates from the specified value

You’ll need a four-way milli-ohm test meter, like this Gossen MetraHit or the Mercedes-Benz approved Hioki meter.

In this test, we will test each leg of the ISA to check resistance in the milli-ohm range.

Test specs for each leg of the ISA:
Phases U to V, then V-W and then W - U: 9.1 milli-ohm plus or minus 0.3
Phases X - Y, then Y - Z and then Z - X: 8.7 milli-ohm or minus 0.3

If any of these values are out of spec, the ISA is faulty and will need to be replaced.
