STONE AGE RAVES - Ancient Psychedelic "Elk Tooth" Dance Parties

Thousands of elk teeth were discovered in a prehistoric burial mound in Karelia, Russia. Archaeologists uncovered sophisticated elk tooth jewellery in over half of the 177 tombs buried there.

These elk-tooth pendants were attached onto Stone Age clothes before groups of these prehistoric peoples engaged in psychedelic dancing rites, according to a study published in the Cambridge Archaeological Journal.

It is thought that these were worn to make hypnotic noises during ritualistic dances. To test the theory, University of Helsinki auditory archaeologist Riitta Rainio danced for six hours wearing a rebuilt rattler.

“Dancing to rattlers allows you to immerse yourself in the soundscape, finally allowing the sound and rhythm to dominate your movements,” Rainio explained. “It's as though something is leading the dance.

“The Stone Age teeth were worn for years or even decades. Studies showed elk teeth were cherished by prehistoric locals.

For those who are still sceptical of prehistoric peoples engaging in hallucinogenic rites, historians have demonstrated that this was more widespread than previously thought.

The Russian discovery further demonstrates that even Stone Age hunter-gatherers found the time to lose themselves in the music.

According to a study, early humans went to deep caverns because of the limited oxygen supply as a way to enter an altered psychological state caused by hypoxia.
