❓Have you ever heard about Amblyopia? It is also commonly called a "Lazy Eye," but what is Amblyopia?

Lazy eye, or amblyopia, is a condition where one eye has reduced vision due to abnormal visual development during early childhood. The affected eye, often called the "lazy" eye, may drift inward or outward.

Amblyopia typically develops from birth up to around age seven and is the most common cause of vision impairment in children. In rare cases, it can affect both eyes.

There are two main causes for Amblyopia, which can affect the eyes' ability to work together and lead the brain to suppress or ignore input from the weaker eye:

Muscle imbalance (strabismus amblyopia): The most common cause of lazy eye is an imbalance in the muscles that control eye positioning. This can lead to the eyes crossing inward or turning outward, preventing them from working in unison.

Difference in sharpness of vision between the eyes (refractive amblyopia): When there is a significant difference in the refractive power of each eye—often due to farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism—it can result in lazy eye.

Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent long-term problems with your child's vision. There are two treatments that can work to correct Amblyopia. The first is to get the proper prescription in place to correct the weaker eye. The second treatment is patching the "good" eye to help the "bad" eye work harder and correct itself.

If you notice your child's eye wandering after the first few weeks of life, it's important to see their doctor. A vision check is especially crucial if there's a family history of crossed eyes, childhood cataracts, or other eye conditions. For all children, a comprehensive eye exam is recommended between ages 3 and 5.
