Abuja is the capital and the eighth most populous city of Nigeria. It is situated in the middle of the country within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a location chosen for its centrality, pleasant climate, and low population density. The city is approximately 300 miles northeast of Lagos, the former capital until 1991. Abuja is a planned city, built mainly in the 1980s based on a master plan by International Planning Associates, a consortium of three American planning and architecture firms.
